Caribou

By Ray Cummings

Published on April 03, 2008

As the irresistibly luminescent new CD Andorra demonstrates, Caribou's Dan Snaith has come a long, long way since being legally stripped of his old Manitoba moniker. These days the same guy who once playfully goofed on post-rock's fetid corpse (on albums such as Up in Flames and Start Breaking My Heart) writes delightful, textured, fake-Sixties pop baubles. Among the best: the buoyant, chiming "Melody Day" and the sultry Beach Boys homage "She's the One" — tunes that are overwhelmingly lovesick. But anyone looking for a wholesome Wayback Machine sugar fix should pony up for a ticket to Caribou's live show.
