Animal Instincts

Go speeding through Kendall and give giraffes love.

You were at the gates of Miami Metrozoo with cigars and champagne when the Oriental small-clawed otters were born, and you’ve seen the black-naped fruit dove so many times he knows your name. It’s no secret you’re a loyal supporter of our very own county-run-and-owned zoo. But the 740-acre animal haven -- particularly its long-necked inhabitants -- needs more of your help. And don’t worry, it’ll be as fun as making faces at the imperial pigeons. Just shine up your motorcycle, car, or truck, and join the third annual Amy’s Ride for the Animals, a benefit to help raise the $50,000 needed to build a giraffe squeeze.

Your $20 donation will allow you and one passenger to participate in the ride and get you free entrance to the zoo plus a commemorative tee, all while contributing to the fund for a custom-made cage the giraffes will love. Snacks and views of four- and two-legged friends are free. Registration is from 8:45 to 10 a.m., and be sure to check out the motorcycle-themed wildlife show at noon. The ride takes off from Amos Sports Grille (7800 SW 104th St., Miami) and ends at Metrozoo. Call 305-905-1860, or visit www.ridefortheanimals.org to register and learn more.
