Colette

By Tamara Palmer

Published on March 20, 2008

L.A. is full of starlets, celebutantes, and wannabe Playboy bunnies who are only too happy to besmirch the name and good reputation of female DJs such as Colette Marino, who actually knows what she's doing. And don't let the pretty looks fool you into thinking otherwise. She's currently residing in the City of Lost Angels, after growing up and training in the American house music capital, Chicago, where if you don't have skills, you simply get laughed out of the booth. And she raises the bar by singing live over her DJ sets (and producing her own songs, for that matter).

Because her DJ sets were already original performances in their own right, leaping into the realm of studio work was a much more natural transition for Colette than for many DJs who try (and often fail) to bridge the divide. She released her debut artist album Hypnotized in 2005 and followed it up last summer with Push. Both are timely reminders that house music is alive.

Set List

1. The Sound Diggers, "Downtown Jam" (Tastie)

2. Sneak, "Zippin on Some Sneak Shit" (promo)

3. Thomas White, "Stubborn Mule" (Guesthouse)

4. Just Jason, "Let It Off (Don Tinsley)" (Tight)

5. Colette, "If (Santiago & Bushido Remix)" (Om)

6. Desperate House Guy, "She's Got Me" (Highjack)

7. Santiago & Bushido with Fame, "For the People" (Potty Mouth)

8. Todd Edwards, "Stormy Days (Bryan Jones Remix) (I Records)

9. Bernard Jones feat. Aren B, "Main Ingredient (Atnarko Remix)" (Kolour Recordings)

10. Green Velvet feat. Russoul, "It's Time to Jack" (Cajual)
