Swamp Thing

Party in the name of environmental protection!

For 10 bucks, you can learn a little something today about the Everglades: Why we need it, how we are destroying it, and what you can do to save it. Oh, yeah, and you can also hear live music that runs the gamut from jazz, tribal rhythms, and traditional Peruvian to funk, hip-hop, world beat fusion, rock and roll, and other forms that defy categorization. The fifth annual Everglades Awareness Benefit Concert is set to span four stages today from 4 p.m. to 3 a.m. at Tobacco Road.

The lineup includes Inner Voice, Jahfe, Ana Kanpa, Kuyayky, Fudakochi, and many others. Alonso and other spoken-word artists will show off their lyrical abilities as they recite their rhymes to, well, music. Complementing the sound will be “live art” by Linx and Carlos Rodriguez, as well as an Everglades art exhibition. The education side of the affair includes scheduled speakers from the Skyway Coalition, plus various representatives from the Miami Sierra Club, the Miami-Dade Green Party, and Artists for Community Evolution. A percentage of proceeds will go to the Everglades Awareness Campaign and local environmental groups.
