Fielding Calls

Octavio Campos and the 801 crew show their stuff.

During Field Work sessions this winter, performance artist and choreographer Octavio Campos found himself treading in strange waters. “It was a really humbling experience for me. I think The Field is something every artist should go through,” he says. The Field’s 10-week workshops brought painters, dancers, performers, video artists, and photographers together to present new projects. At the end of each session, a facilitator led a discussion in which participants gave each other feedback. “It was intense,” Campos adds. During the sessions, Campos developed Cell, a kooky hybrid theater piece based on conceptual crank calls. “I was playing Russian roulette with my cell phone and randomly dialing numbers on my contacts list. I ended up calling American Airlines and booking a dozen first-class seats for a flight to Paris,” he laughs. “I couldn’t believe the tickets would cost $16,000.”

Tonight at 8 and tomorrow at 4 at 801 Projects, Camposition Studio and The Field/Miami are presenting Field Day, an informal revue of the works created by the group this winter. “It’s going to be a wild show,” Campos gushes. “We will have some deconstructed flamenco, a bunch of edgy performances, and even a stop-motion animation.” Suggested donation for the event is $8.01.
