Right Here, Right Now

Miami Light Project puts on a helluva show.

By Carlos Suarez De Jesus

Published on February 28, 2008

For those in the Big Mango jonesing for a bleeding edge theater, dance, or multimedia performance fix, the Miami Light Project’s Here & Now Festival has been the place for a mainline dose for the past 16 years. This year’s head-jolting lineup includes world premieres by Teresa Barcelo, Joanne Barrett, Diana Lozano, and Ileigh Reynolds, who have been torching South Florida stages with stimulating and innovative productions in recent years.

In her first major commission, Z Minus, Barcelo -- a freelance performance artist and well-rounded hoofer -- elevates sheep-counting to high art, exploring sleep deprivation through dance and sound. Lozano gets down and dirty with toilets and stripper poles in Grotesque Burlesque, a provocative yet sensual piece flipping the mirror on self-image. Today at 2 and 6 at the Arsht Center, get a taste of the upcoming March 12 through 15 festival events with the Skunkape Project, featuring readings by playwrights Lucas Leyva, Tarell Alvin McCraney, and Marco Ramirez. For ticket prices and festival information, call 305-949-6722, or visit www.arshtcenter.org or www.miamilightproject.com.
