Sarnoff Turns His Back on Blacks

Coconut Grove's other half feels left out.

Dressed in a fire-engine-red short-sleeve button-down shirt and matching slacks, George Symonette leans back in the barber chair where he has clipped hair for more than a decade. The 65-year-old's face tightens and his words come fast as he discusses city Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, who represents Coconut Grove and many of Miami's wealthy bayfront communities.

"He doesn't want to make himself known to the real people, and he's trying to get all the black businesses out," says the goateed Symonette, who runs one of the few shops left on once-bustling Grand Avenue. "Around here, Sarnoff means 'signed off.'"

Whispers have circulated at city hall in recent weeks that the commissioner is contemplating a run for mayor in 2009, when Manny Diaz will have to step down. If Sarnoff is to achieve his goal, it's clear he must win back African-American voters like Symonette and others in the West Grove, where 80 percent of the population is black, mostly of West Indian origin, and 26 percent of the residents live below the federal poverty level.

Sarnoff's credibility with the community took a major hit after he publicly disclosed a memo detailing an alleged conversation he had last May 8 with former City Manager Joe Arriola. Sarnoff wrote that Arriola told him that to win Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones's vote on two controversial condo projects, the developers had to hire two of her friends.

Arriola claims the conversation never happened. Spence-Jones, the city's only black commissioner, denies any wrongdoing. And well-known black leaders, including Liberty City activist Billy Hardemon and former U.S. Rep. Carrie Meek, have called the Anglo commish a "liar" and a "racist."

Perhaps as a way to establish a connection with the black community, Sarnoff unveiled on February 13 a three-point plan to ban assault rifles in the city. During a press conference, he was flanked by Miami Police Chief John Timoney, several deputy chiefs, and the wife and parents of Det. James Walker, a black officer killed by an assault-rifle-wielding perpetrator this past January 8.

As TV news cameras from seven local stations filmed, Sarnoff said Miami is under seige by gang members carrying machine guns and assault rifles. "Our police are outgunned and outmanned," he said. "These weapons are designed to kill with lethal force."

After the press conference, he refused to comment about his political future.

One person Sarnoff is unlikely to win over is Walter Parlins III, owner of Rustic Treasures, an African-themed coffee bar at 3670 Grand Ave., across the street from Symonette's shop. He says the commissioner — a lawyer whose practice is located in his house on nearby Shipping Avenue — hasn't helped black areas. "He's not making a strong effort to help sustain the businesses," Parlins says. "This man should be held accountable to this community."

The heavy-set, 42-year-old Archbishop Curley Notre Dame High School graduate operates Rustic Treasures with his 47-year-old wife Bonna. The two Grovites are also on the board of directors for the Coconut Grove Village West Island District Merchants Association. "Unlike Commissioner Sarnoff, I don't have the luxury of running a law firm from my house," Parlins says. "I have a grassroots business that is struggling to get people through the door."

It was at a 2006 candidates forum that Parlins first met Sarnoff, who was running against incumbent Linda Haskins. "He kept painting himself as this David versus Goliath," Parlins says. The next day, he invited Sarnoff for tea at his shop. "I wanted to brainstorm with him — you know, get inside his head.

"We made an appointment for him to come [to Rustic Treasures]," Parlins says. "He never showed up."

Then, a month after Sarnoff defeated Haskins on November 21, 2006, the merchant association held its Christmas party at Basil's in the Grove, a Caribbean restaurant at 3301 Grand Ave. "We invited Sarnoff and his staff," says Parlins, adding that only Yvonne McDonald, Sarnoff's sole black aide, showed up. "By 11:30 p.m., we knew he wasn't coming."

Basil's owner, Samir Nadkarni, a tall man with a bushy black beard who also lives in the Grove, confirms Parlins's account. He points out that Sarnoff spends a lot of time at trendy Green Street Café in the heart of the Grove's business district, but rarely visits predominantly black areas nearby. "He is not as available as I thought he would be," Nadkarni says. "He won't come here, yet he says he is a man of the people."

Nadkarni criticizes the commissioner for not cracking down on slumlords and crime. "My place has been broken into three times in the last six months," he says. "All Sarnoff has given me is lip service."

Timothy Williams, owner of Smokey's Fish Market at 3646 Grand Ave., says he hasn't met the commissioner. "He's never been in here," he says. "And I've been here four years."

Avoiding the Grove's black businesses is just one example of Sarnoff's insensitivity, Parlins claims. He cites a commission meeting this past September 11 as another instance. Bonna Parlins attended the hearing to find out why their coffee bar failed to receive a $10,000 grant from a $370,000 community development fund set aside for small businesses in the commissioner's district.

As a buisness owner, property owner as well as a resident in the Grove. I'm offended by the covrage or courage to report fair and accurate story of our Commisioner Sarnoff. Did he seek to appease everyone or he saw something that wasn right and started a movement? That eventually led him to becoming a Commisioner and with that he has a constituency. I never once met Jhonny Winton or for that matter any other Commisioner for the Grove. They say he does'nt care about Black Grove who cares we have to care about ourselves. If we dont have the right ideas and the proper knowledge to grow our buisness we are doom to fail. We have to be inclusive as well as exclusive. I have made it my buisness to be all that Miami has to offer, the unofficial "Don" of Miami, From sponsoring the Track club in the Grove, football, cheerleaders, the Black Top and any kid i can inspire, motivate encourage to be the BEST. Sarnoff came to the Don and we talked. I believe that he wants change from business as usual but we must take charge of our own Destiny. I have Big plans for myself and alike people on Grand Ave. Where else can you find the little kid coming form the Key to Alonso Mourning coming to the Grove but Headliners and The House of Wings becasue im the Best at wht i do. I refuse to allow any one tell me or try to deny me wealth. George Symonett doesnt own no business in the Grove so he is disgrunlted and miserable. Commisioner Sarnoff has come on Grand Ave at my request and we walked up Grand with no body guard at my request to see what we can achieve and i have to admit we share in alot of common things take pride in your buisness , community and people. I looked forward to working with him. I want a nice house, nice wife, good buisness and good pedigree, who don't. I want my children to have integrity, morals and decent place to live. That's the American Dream AINT IT?

Marc Sarnoff Lies About His Lineage Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 02:32:16 PM For quite some time, Miami city Commissioner Marc Sarnoff has represented himself as the grandson of the late commercial radio and television pioneer General David Sarnoff. The Russian-American media executive rose through the ranks of the Radio Corporation of America, holding the title of chairman for more than two decades until his retirement in 1970. As RCAs president in 1939, David Sarnoff launched NBC, the nations first TV network. Thats a grandpa any ambitious tyke would love to call his own, and Marc Sarnoff has. The thing is, the Sarnoff clan has no idea who Marc Sarnoff is. The commissioners online bio states, the General David Sarnoff is also the grandfather of Marc David Sarnoff.... As his grandfather, he believes in establishing solutions for information, networking, and multimedia communications.... (As of today, the bio has been removed.) This past October 16, as the guest of honor at an Urban Environment League dinner forum, the commissioner discussed his grandfather, though he didnt have much to share regarding his parents splitup when he was eight years old. You wont hear me speak much about the Sarnoff side of the family, Sarnoff explained. My grandfather died right around the time my parents were getting divorced. I do remember he would love to watch me go to swim meets when I was a young boy. Could it be the commissioner doesnt have many memories of David Sarnoff because they are not really blood relatives? Thats what the man charged with preserving the media tycoons legacy says. Alex Magoun, executive director of the David Sarnoff Library in Princeton, New Jersey, insists Marc Sarnoff, who was born on December 18, 1959, is not one of David Sarnoffs nine grandchildren. It is quite a puzzle, Magoun says. David Sarnoff had three sons, each of whom had three children of their own. None of them were born in 1959 and none of them are named Marc. So Riptide checked New York newspapers, Internet resources, and author Eugene Lyonss 1966 tome David Sarnoff: A Biography to trace the commissioners genealogy, all of which confirm Magouns assertion that the commish is not one of those Sarnoffs. On Monday, Sarnoff attempted to correct the record. David is his great-uncle, not his granddaddy. I know very little about my family, he said. My understanding is that he is my great-uncle or something like that. Davids connection with the Sarnoff clan ended in 1969, when his father Joel divorced his mother, the commissioner added. I dont know my grandfathers name, Sarnoff replied when asked the identity of his paternal granddad. I just remember he had big hands. David had three brothers and one sister: Irving, Lou, Morris, and Edie. None them had a son named Joel or a grandson named Marc, according to Paula Sarnoff, Irvings 81-year-old daughter. I havent a clue who this man is, she says of the commissioner. He is certainly not Davids grandson, nephew, or otherwise. He is not related to us. Francisco Alvar

Sarnoff a liar?? Of course he is. He lied his way through his campaign - and he'll keep on lying - its pathological with him. Sarnoff a racist? Of course he is. He thinks he can say the right thing, give $1,000 to the Obama campaign and people will ignore his frequent racist jokes and use of the you know what word. Sarnoff an elitist? Of course he is, the Grove should "cater to the wealthy," according to him - and his attempt explain himself was idiotic - like depends on what the definition of is is. Sarnoff vicious? Of course he is. Ask the neighbors that he terrorized or look at the crap he personally threw out about people that ran against him, hinted they may run against him or just plain old disagreed with him. He should be removed.

  • ray 02/22/2008 12:11:00 AM

He's arrogant and elitist, whether to blacks, anglos or latins. And, he's already gone back on his word on so many major campaign promises -- the stadium, streetcar ... He's looking more and more like our Mayor. Using our taxes (or toursits') for mega projects, but not working to lower real estate taxes. Not working to provide infrastructure services, much needed. What a dissappointment. And you grovites, should wake up.

  • Arleen Dixon, West Grove 02/21/2008 11:49:00 PM

Marc Sarnoff doesn't care about black people.

  • Tired of it All 02/21/2008 10:27:00 PM

Sarnoff is ignoring the neediest people in the City of Miami. Whether we like it or not, the HUD funds are to be used to help individuals and businesses - give them a leg up. Why is he taking care of his close friend and staffer, Yvonne MacDonald, with $167,000 and ignoring the small businesses? It is because all he cares about is the same old stuff we get from politicians. They take care of their friends. $167,000 to an organization who has let their buildings deteriorate over the years because the president of the organization supported him. $272,000 to his firefighter friend to run a campaign against two nobodies. $14,000 to his hatchet man friend, the building inspector. $200,000 in kiosks in the Grove to keep an eye on the black folk rather than to St. Alban's daycare. And let's not forget the $100,000 traffic circle for his house and changing the park that he calls his front yard so the black kids can't play there.

  • Glenn61 02/21/2008 5:12:00 PM

No Sarnoff Fan, You don't know me but if you did you'd probably like me. I know plenty of fine Black folks that I like very much and I've experienced no shortage of dumb-shit White people as well. But there is a culture of victim hood in America that makes me want to puke and at the forefront is White Liberal left wing ideologues. And at the foundation is the remnant of the civil rights movement perverted into a culture of perpetual victim hood. If you meet and observe people from places like Eastern Europe, North Africa or the Far East, you will see in them a strength and will to survive that we in American have lost. The population of these United States is fast becoming a dependent, stupefied, fat and lazy bunch of crying weaklings. And the establishment realizes this. Socialist politicians have long wanted to turn us into a mailable and dependent voting block and have been largely successful. And where they have not been able to do so they have imported millions of uneducated and unskilled immigrants among us to water down our neighborhoods and break up resistance to their goal of a Communist style system of elite overlords of a controlled populace of half working like slaves with the Federal and State taking a Lion's share of their paycheck. And half non-working, dependent slobs always willing to run to the polls and vote themselves a raise at the working half's expense,,,keeping the Socialist power brokers in charge. In Black neighborhoods the nice White Liberals have succeeded in establishing the welfare culture and the drug culture, thus achieving their goal in just a couple of generations. Fact is all the cultured, feel good politics from Liberals is just a cover for all the evil shit they want to do to us. I hope I didn't stray too far from the article's storyline but I felt compelled. .........Marc (now you know me)

  • Glenn61 02/21/2008 6:31:00 AM

I'm numb to it,,,the whole" Oh woe is me" syndrome. It's a pathetic display,,,especially when it comes from Black people who have received the largest helpings of governmental assistance from both the State and Federal government. Nobody gives a shit about the poor and disenfranchised White people in this country or the hard working achievers who are asked to step aside for a minority to be propped up. Sure discrimination happens but it's only official when it happens to a Black,,,I mean African-American and not white,,,or maybe Euro-American.... WOW,,I just coined a new phrase,,,,,I wonder if it will catch on. Maybe in the future we will have White folks groveling for assistance with the Dumb Cracker college fund or a National assistance program for whiny pathetic White trash lacking good judgment and sense but blaming it on over bearing Black people..... Imagine the possibilities.

  • The worrd on the Street 02/21/2008 4:41:00 AM

The word on the street is that Marc Sarnoff provided free legal services to Officer Audrey Eckart in exchange for her "assistance." I hope that Franciso Alvarado will look into this.

  • Ellen 02/21/2008 4:08:00 AM

That previous post about West Grove kids getting kicked out of the park is true. That happened when Sarnoff was the president of the Center Grove Neighborhood Association. The hockey coach was Bruce Reep. Bruce Reep lives next door to Mayor Manny Diaz. Bruce tried to enlist the help of Manny Diaz when Sarnoff kicked his team out of Peacock Park. Manny Diaz refused to help. The Grove has a long history of nasty polititians using the police to do their dirty work for them but Sarnoff brought the practice to a new level. This is the same police officer (Audrey Eckert) that Sarnoff used to kick the kids out of Blanche Park. Under the instruction of Sarnoff, she told the Warren Fence Company to install the fence at Blanche Park Dog Park in a location other than that which was on the parks master plan, thus leaving no room for neighborhood children, who incidentally, were black. I think Sarnoff has proven that he is not fit to serve the people. He should be forced to step down.

  • Ozzie 02/21/2008 3:45:00 AM

The Commissioner probably has 80,000 constituents in his district. He often spends 20% of his time trying to help the West Grove. Sometimes even great commissioners need help.

  • ChrisJohnson 02/21/2008 3:26:00 AM

Can't wait to hear the rest of the story on these allegations. Unfortunately, they are just in the New Times blog. Guess every dog has his day and its not always a walk in the dog park! Support Sarnoff, Get Paid Tue Feb 12, 2008 at 05:39:16 PM Since his election on November 21, 2006, Miami City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff has cast himself as the do-gooder reformer on the commission dais. He sponsored legislation that requires outgoing city commissioners to seek approval from their colleagues when doling out last minute bonuses to their staff. He also authored the citys disclosure law, which requires people who are paid by city vendors or developers to disclose that fact when they appear before the city commission. Then there is the memo he authored last year detailing a conversation with former City Manager Joe Arriola, alleging Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones ordered the developer of the controversial Mercy Hospital condo project to hire two of her close friends in exchange for her vote. But Sarnoff may want to keep closer tabs on the questionable dealings of some of his closest supporters. Consider the actions of the commissioners Senior Staff Liaison Ryan Alexander, who circumvented the citys procurement rules by hiring his own company to install a fence at a Coconut Grove park. A Grove resident, Alexander is one of Sarnoffs closest allies, having known the commissioner since the Nineties, when the pair founded the Center Grove Neighborhood Association. In 2006 and last year, Alexander gave $1500 to his friends political campaigns. He is also the owner of Berimbau Investments, which last July put up a wrought-iron black fence with gates at a small city-owned park between Margaret Street and Oak Avenue in Coconut Grove. According to an invoice written on Berimbau Investments letterhead Alexander submitted to the citys Park and Recreation Department this past November, the commissioners aide sought payment for $14,500. In order to get paid, Alexander also provided two quotes for $26,536 and $24,638 from Bachiller Iron Works, a Miami-based fence installation company. He obtained the quotes on October 15 and 25 of last year almost four months after he had already completed the job. During a recent interview, Sarnoff said Alexander, who is not authorized to make purchases on behalf of the citys park and recreation department, made a mistake and will not be getting paid for the fence. Ryan is a get-things-done-kind-of-guy, Sarnoff said. He took it upon himself to do a project that I wanted to get done. Sarnoff said he did not know Alexander decided to put up the fence without going through the proper channels. He went too far too fast, Sarnoff admitted. He expended his own money and unfortunately he wont be compensated for it. Alexander insists he did nothing wrong. "This issue was languishing on the city's desk for two years," he said. "At the time I was not very familiar with the city's procurement process. Now I am." This is not the first time Sarnoff has had a conflict of interest problem in his office. This past September 11, he gave the Coconut Grove Urban Empowerment Corporation a $167,000 grant from his commission districts community development funds. At the time, the nonprofit agency listed Sarnoffs Coconut Grove Community Liaison Yvonne McDonald as its president. McDonald contributed $100 to Sarnoffs reelection campaign and served with him on the Coconut Grove Village Council. This past January 10, the city commission rescinded the $167,000 allocation to Urban Empowerment because McDonalds involvement with the group violated conflict of interest rules established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which provided the funding. When I made the allocation I was not aware that there was a conflict, Sarnoff explained. Then there is Sarnoffs campaign manager Wilbur Jackson, who is employed as a Miami firefighter and as the executive assistant to the president of Miami Association of Firefighters. Apparently, Jackson found enough free time from his two demanding jobs to run Sarnoffs campaign from April 10, 2007, the day Sarnoff qualified, to election day this past November 6. According to state incorporation records, Jackson formed Southeast Political & Campaign Consulting Inc. on February 26, 2007. Sarnoffs reelection campaign paid Jacksons company $271,873.76 to do everything from producing television commercials to mailing out campaign literature to election day logistics. The amount paid to Southeast Political is $91,787 more than the entire amount Sarnoff spent in his first run for commissioner in 2006, when he faced an incumbent who raised twice as much money as he did. Last year, Sarnoff only faced marginal opposition from a socialist candidate and a communist contender. So did Jackson obtain permission from City Manager Pete Hernandez to have outside employment doing political activities? Jackson did not return a phone call seeking comment. According to Sarnoff: As far as I know yes he did. Francisco Alvarado

  • Sarnoff Must GO!!! 02/21/2008 3:07:00 AM

I went and took my kids out of Coconut Grove Elementary School when I heard that Sarnoff was coming to read to the kids. He is such a poser! He shows up to community things when it he thinks it is a good public relations thing to do but he really is a racist and an elitist. When asked if the Miami Magazine should deliver in the West Grove, Sarnoff said, "why should they...they (black people) don't read anyhow."

Sarnoff has a long history of racist behavior. Sarnoff, with the help of a N.E.T. police officer, Audrey Eckhart, kicked West Grove kids out of Peacock Park. He said it was bad for businesses in the central business district to have black kids skating through the business district to their hockey practice in Peacock Park. He even wrote that in a letter to the newspaper! He got Officer Audrey Eckhart to but a chain lock on their practice area in the park. Then she threw all of their hockey equipment away that was donated by the Florida Panthers that was stored in the glass house at the park. The kids were told to never come back to the public park. This is how the real Sarnoff operates. It is a shame that he has gotten this fa, but it would be a real disaster if were to become Mayor. We must find an honest, viable candidate now! Secret Memo Sarnoff must go!!
