Music School Superstars

Listen to local talent at the FEASt Festival.

When you think student musician, an inadvertent snore might bubble from your lips. We don’t mean to be snarky (okay, yes we do), but most performances by college kids in music school tend to sway to the beats of jazz fusion or wannabe jam bands. Quality isn’t necessarily guaranteed. But we’re happy to inform you that won’t be the case at the second annual FEASt Festival. Hosted by FIU, the Florida Electro-Acoustic Student Festival will feature only the best and brightest collegiate musicians from our state. “We’ve got some great musicians from colleges all over Florida. It’s like a festival of sound art. Call it noise if you will, but our goal is to bring in people who might not always appreciate this medium to realize that it’s art,” says musician and unofficial event director Eric DeLuca. At the event, DeLuca will do a remix of John Cage’s work.

First and foremost, the FEASt Fest peeps want local music fans to understand this won’t be some academic snoozefest. “This is basically an event you could find at Churchill’s or Studio A, but in a nice arena, with great sound. Just come out and give it a chance,” says DeLuca. Hear that, hipsters? Head to FIU’s Wertheim Performing Arts Center tonight at 8 or tomorrow at 3, when composers like Kristine H. Burns, Colby Leider, and Gustavo Matamoros will take the stage for some open-session jamming. The event is free.
Fri., Feb. 1, 8 p.m.; Sat., Feb. 2, 3 p.m., 2008
