Hardy Har Har

Your laughter will benefit charity at the Improv this month.

It’s Tuesday night in the Grove. You’ve made a left at Wet Willie’s and you’re greeted by a mood-lit plaza where, inexplicably, an eager crowd is queued up and ready for a night of guffawing, chuckling, and cackling. Because these people know that after they step through the glass doors, they’ll be inside the Miami Improv, and if you don’t laugh here, you might need to see a shrink. Once a week for the past 10 years, the Miami Improv has abandoned its standard funny for a vibe that’s sprinkled with hot sauce, and called it the Improv Comedy Jam, hosted by 99 Jamz’s Benji Brown.

The menu morphs into a culinary extravaganza called Soul Food Tuesday, the comedy is pure urban fire, and, like its namesake -- the legendary HBO series Def Comedy Jam -- the show gives the spotlight to stars and newbies, and consistently brings the laughs. Tonight local favorite Malik S. and the incomparable “African King of Comedy,” Michael Blackson, will be tickling your funny bone. Tickets cost $15 (don’t forget the two-drink minimum). In honor of Black History Month, the club is donating a portion of the proceeds to Alonzo Mourning Charities, so you won’t feel bad when you’re laughing at Benji Brown ripping on somebody’s mama.
