MoCA Loves the Kids

Teens, discover your inner calling at MoCA Fresh 2008.

If there’s one thing the artsy-fartsies in this city love, it’s young, up-and-coming creative talent with edgy ability. If you’re the new, hot painter, sculptor, dancer, musician, or avant-garde performance whatever and you fall into the right Wynwood/Design District circle, you too can be the toast of Miami. The people at MoCA know this well, and to nurture the upcoming generation of Miami’s next-big-things, they’re back with MoCA Fresh 2008.

According to organizers, this year’s Fresh will be “a celebration of design, dance, art, and education,” which means you can drop off your sullen teenager at the Museum of Contemporary Art for a day of creative indulgence chock-a-block with dance performances, design workshops, and art activities. Students from Miami-Dade County magnet schools and local universities will exhibit their art, learn fly choreography in interactive workshops, and tour the exhibition “Jorge Pardo: House.” Silk-screen artist Rocky Grimes will be on hand to customize tees for the ideal memento. Besides the creative fun, there’ll be an education expo to help your aspiring artist figure out where to continue his or her learning curve. To sweeten the educational deal, attending students can vie for an iPod. Sweet! It begins at noon and ends at 4 p.m. Call 305-893-6211, or visit www.mocanomi.com to reserve a workshop spot.
