Let’s Go Fishin’

Head down to Islamorada for the first catch of the year.

A great blessing of living in South Florida near the Gulf Stream is winter sailfishing; there’s a real opportunity to catch the jaguars of the sea. They’re famous for spectacular dorsal fins, fast growth (several feet in one year; adults commonly weigh 100 pounds), as well as fearsome speed, agility, and strength. And there are the numerous tournaments they inspire, including the Outdoor Channel’s Offshore Classic in the waters off Islamorada. Last year’s winners caught and released 15 sails in one day.

Area resorts are offering deals, and at least three marinas are providing charters, so you can go by boat, car, or foot. For the boatless and baitless, the tourney is an excuse to head down to the Keys and a chance to support the Paralyzed Veterans of America. The festivities last for three days. The Islander Resort, at Mile Marker 82.1 on Overseas Highway, Islamorada, serves as official headquarters. Call 1-800-753-6002, or visit www.igfatournaments.com.
