The Return of the Great Ginger Blooze

Rolling Stone’s Elysa Gardner has praised her “feisty courage.” That same magazine’s Greg Kot has said she “glowed with a hard-won grace.” Robert Christgau, late of the Village Voice, has called her “boring.” Alack, Bonnie Raitt is probably worthy of all these comments and more.

She has been a barefoot Boston folkie, an anti-nukes activist, a glassy-eyed sauce monster, and the wife of a Buddhist priest. She’s also got an awesome, whiskey-soaked alto and is the best female rockyrow guitarist ever to walk the Earth. You either love her ’cause she’s got nine Grammys and you’re impressed by that kind of thing, or you’ve got good taste and you loved her cover of Del Shannon’s “Runaway” way back in ’77, or you’re some kind of mutant and never tired of that sickeningly sweet video for “You Got It” from Boys on the Side (remember)? But the main thing is that you love her, you do, and you know it. To catch Raitt in all of her oft-gooey glory, head to Hard Rock Live tonight at 8:00.
