Biblical Feats

Zounds! Celebrating architects do amazing acts

One thing you can't argue about with regard to Jesus: He set the bar pretty high, especially athletically speaking. Michael Jordan may have dunked from the free-throw line, but Jesus? He walked on water, and ever since, people have been hatin’ but not replicatin’. A bunch of architecture students will try again at the 19th annual Walk on Water competition. Their sea of choice -- the reclaimed lake in front of FIU's Green Library -- ain't exactly Galilee, so mistakes could be costly.

What this contest has to do with architecture is anybody's guess, but it’s just one event in a month-long docket of happenings sponsored by the Miami chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Celebrate Architecture 2007 ends November 29 with the Festival of the Trees, during which South Florida designers will imaginatively reinvent the holiday tree on Brickell Avenue. Every day between now and then, there will be lectures, tours, exhibitions, receptions, and even a sand-castle-building competition in Crandon Park, where we hope one ironic, disenchanted contestant will build the Marlins a new stadium with a retractable seashell roof.
