Champagne Steals on a Beer Budget

Cool art goes for cheap at Locust Projects

If you’re dreaming of building an impressive art collection but you’re living the same paycheck-to-paycheck life the rest of us are, listen up. Tonight at Locust Projects, starting an art collection on a Green Stamp budget is a guaranteed deal – so say organizers of the gallery’s annual fundraiser. At 6:30, the nonprofit celebrates Smash & Grab – a unique event during which anyone who ponies up a mere $395 can take home an original piece by one of Miami’s top artists.

Here’s how it works: Arrive early, purchase a raffle ticket, and scope out the 100 oil paintings, photographs, sculpture, videos, and funky conceptual creations on display. At 7:30, the names of ticket holders will be selected randomly and budding collectors can snag their favorite piece in the order they are called. If someone beats you to that quirky drawing you had an eye on, don’t fret. Last year some lucky collector left Locust with an artist’s old sock; we hear it’s worth a bundle now. For those who simply want to support the edgy space’s cause, tickets cost $50.
