Two years ago the honchos at the Florida State Division of Cultural Affairs decided the state needed to do something that would enrich the lives of Floridians, so they went to the Center of Emerging Art for help. The powers that be asked the CEA to form a chamber ensemble and create the Music Map of the World concert series, a remake of the 1928 radio program The Edison Hour. The CEA created a modern take on a classic idea. The series is a collection of music from famous composers from 31 countries and seven continents, all spread out over a four-year period. Last year celebrated the beats and melodies of music from Austria, Germany, and Latin America. This year Italy, the United States, and Africa are on the menu.

“Music is a wonderful language which is understood by everyone. By understanding another’s culture and heritage, we get to understand ourselves better, and our neighbors and our community,” says Executive Director Ava L. Rado. The series runs from today through October 14 at The Standard. Tonight at 6:30, the CEA Chamber Ensemble will perform music by famous Italian composers, and sopranos Nadia Zehtabi and Heather Gallagher will sing Italian arias. The event is free and open to the public; suggested donations are $20, and $10 for seniors and children.
