Celebrations in the City

What with its diverse blend of native Spanish-speakers, Miami has much to commemorate this Hispanic Heritage Month. Events, taking place throughout the city, are all designed to pay much-deserved tribute to the achievements and contributions of Hispanics who have made this nation (and especially this city) the culturally fascinating melting pot that it is. What does this all mean for you, the reader who’s itching for an exciting event to attend? It means a month jammed with concerts, fiestas, and fun for all ages. There are two such free events tonight; for those about to salsa, we salute you!

At the Shops at Sunset Place (5701 Sunset Dr., South Miami), the new Hispanic Heritage Entertainment Series kicks off tonight with a performance by rock/funk band LocoYo, which will rock out on the Plaza Stage from 7:00 to 9:00. Visit www.simon.com/mall/aym for event details. The kids will be dancing to the rhythm of familiar Latin artists like Carlos Vives and Elvis Crespo at the second annual Hispanic Heritage Festival at the North Shore Park Youth Center (501 72nd St., Miami Beach). Besides children’s dance performances, there will be a tasting village, rides, and a salsa and merengue contest. The fun begins at 6:00 and ends at 9:00, and admission is free. Call 305-861-3616, or visit www.miamibeachparks.com.
