Just Hoof It

Or oink, neigh, or cluck it for a good cause

The pastoral critters in literary classics Animal Farm and Charlotte’s Web called meetings and staged uprisings when they had issues that needed resolving. But as far as we humans know, that doesn’t really happen. Good Samaritans like the folks at Farm Sanctuary are left to stand up for our mammalian brothers.

Since 1986, the group has been busy rehabilitating and providing care for rescued farm animals, as well as raising public awareness about farm cruelty. Since your part in this cause is generally limited to skipping beef at the buffet, join Farm Sanctuary and thousands of its supporters at the 2007 Walk for Farm Animals. The charitable stroll begins and ends at the South Beach Wild Oats Market and takes you through the Lincoln Road Mall and other locations. Your $10 registration fee buys you entry into the walk, an event T-shirt, and some humanitarian good vibrations. Register on-site at 4:00 p.m. or at www.walkforanimals.org.

As a native Miami gal who now works for Farm Sanctuary at the group's California Shelter, I know first hand how vital events like the Walk for Farm Animals are. I thank each and every one of you who attend the Walk, that helps raise critical funds for our rescue and protection efforts. Perhaps you remember the ballot initiative from 2001 that banned the use of gestation crates for pregnant sows? That was due in large part to Farm Sanctuary, and because of the success in Florida, we are now replicating the initiative here in California (and also adding a ban on veal crates and battery cages)!
