If you work in downtown Miami, you see them all the time -- homeless people and their doggies, begging for food on corners. Insensitive and unsavvy types have been known to wonder aloud, “If you’re homeless, why have a dog?” The sad truth is, for the destitute and downtrodden, sometimes the love of a pet is all they have in this world. And for that love, they willingly sacrifice their own comfort and safety by steering clear of the shelters that won’t house them and Fido too.

In an effort to raise funds for a pet-friendly shelter it plans to build, Camillus House has reached out to the Humane Society and Books & Books to host a very special fundraiser. Under the moonlight, Barks and Books will offer party lovers wine and hors d’oeuvres, as well as a chance to meet cool new friends from the Camillus House Young Leaders (CHYL) and PetNet, the Humane Society’s young professionals group. Plus the store will donate 20 percent of its sales to both charities. Admission is $20 at the door, and you’re allowed to bring your own furry BFF, as long as she’s well-behaved and leashed.
