Nature’s Candy

Check out a fruity celebration in Key West

Did you know you don’t have to go to Publix to buy fruit? Oh yes! Our neighbors to the south in Monroe County know this, and they aren’t shy about boasting their knowledge of the “forbidden” or otherwise perfectly delectable fruit you can grow right at home. Come get your fructose overdose at this year’s Tropical Fruit Fiesta, held today at Bayview Park. It’s a great excuse to cruise on down and be a parrothead for a day.

Cooks can learn about adding local fruits such as mango, papaya, and key lime to everyday dishes. Hard-core nuts can buy trees, compete in homegrown fruit contests, and bid at an auction. Experts from Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and the University of Florida will be around to answer all of your fruit-related questions. They even habla español at a bilingual fruit clinic! The free, fun family event takes from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Put that apple down and call 305-292-4501, or visit www.fla-keys.com.
Sat., June 30, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
