Dancin’ Machines

Watch the pros move it, move it

When the first few chords of a good song play, the true dancer switches on, ready to react to the beat and the melody. His or her movements mirror the music. But you? Sometimes your wires get crossed, and even though the song is clearly smooth jazz, you employ some electronica moves. So embarrassing. You and your two left feet might want to lay low until Saturday, June 30, when the Florida Dance Festival leaves town. Because for the next ten days, dance students, professionals, and enthusiasts from around the world will hold performances, attend master classes and workshops, and mix and mingle at socials all over the city.

“We don't have a lot of full-time companies, but we do have a lot of dancers. This [festival] gives them an opportunity to see what’s going on [in dance] around the world,” says Bill Doolin, Florida Dance Association’s interim director. Tonight at 8:00 at the Colony Theater (1040 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach) will be Miami & Kaohsung/Dancing Together 2007, a special collaboration that is crisscrossing the globe. For festival information, tickets, and showtimes call 305-547-1117 or visit www.floridadancefestival.com.
