Trinidadian Punks

When foreigners think of music from Trinidad, the syncopated rhythms of soca music and the beachy lilt of traditional calypso most immediately come to mind. But surprise, surprise – Trinidad also has a pretty happening rock scene, ranging from Dave Matthews-esque jam band-ness to crunchy alternative garage angst anthems. Up-and-coming band Skid Nevely falls firmly in the latter category.

Led by steel pan player Andrew McIntosh, the band fuses Green Day-inspired vocals and choppy Ramones-like riffs with the ever-refreshing sounds of the tenor steel pan. They call their sound “steel punk.” Whatever it is, it’s surprisingly fresh and will definitely add some island breeze to the darkened punk haven that is Churchill’s Pub. The group will be featured among a lineup of local favorites, including the Crumbs and the Laundry Room Squelchers, tonight around 10:00. Admission is ten bucks. Call 305-757-1807, or better yet, visit www.skidnevely.com to hear for yourself.
Fri., June 1, 10 p.m.
