Go Shorty

Party like it’s your Earth Day

Now that it’s cool to be environmentally savvy (peep Leonardo DiCaprio’s steez on the cover of this month’s Vanity Fair for inspiration), here’s hoping that more Miamians turn out to celebrate Earth Day this year. There are celebrations taking place all over the city, but unlike the typical outdoorsy weekend fare, these are interactive events for citizens who give a damn about keeping our city beautiful. So we suggest you scrape your lazy butt off the couch and join the cool kids in some Earth Day activities today.

As luck would have it, today is also National and Global Youth Service Day, and there are events taking place all over the planet for it from April 20 to 22. To learn more about a service project you can participate in, visit www.ysa.org. Celebrate Hispanic Earth Day in West Flagler (175 SW 120th Ave., Miami), and learn how to save the planet at the first carbon-neutral awareness community event. This event costs five dollars for kids, ten for adults. E-mail earthday@cgconservation.org, or visit www.cgconservation.org. The biggest celebration in Miami will be the EarthFest — WaterFest Gone Green event at the Crandon Park Visitor’s and Biscayne Nature Center (6767 Crandon Blvd., Key Biscayne). We’re talking live music by the Spam Allstars, Agape, Marc Berner, and the Earthman Band. There will be film screenings; a “swap shack” where attendees can give away clothing, toys, and home accessories and take their donated items of choice; a water-tasting table; tram tours;, nature walks; and a gigantic slide for the kids called the “Titanic slide.” Apparently it’s shaped like the boat. Interesting! Admission to this bonanza is free; parking is five dollars. Call 305-361-6767 ext. 111, or visit www.greenermiami.com/earthfest.
