If your mental picture of a self-help guru involves a comb-over, a speech impediment, and a powder-blue cardigan (because gosh darn it, people like you), allow Christopher Lee Nutter to completely destroy that warm and fuzzy stereotype. First of all, he’s kind of hot. Second of all, the dude has lived his life to the fullest, and his wisdom comes from experience. Stewart Smalley would never dare utter this: “Honey, nobody hit it harder than I did, trust me!”

A gay person’s journey out of the closet is typically private and full of trepidation. Not Nutter’s. Despite his early struggles with realization and acceptance of his homosexuality, he came out with a bang by writing an incredibly brave and beautiful essay for Details magazine in 1994. Thirteen years later the whole concept of coming out has changed dramatically. “The genie’s out of the bottle and it can’t be put back! Soon we’re going to see a new class emerge — the gay people who were never in the closet. Still, the self-loathing is hugely present, and is still there in the psyche of even the most proud and fabulous gay men in the world,” says Nutter. His new book, The Way Out, should be required reading for gay readers of all ages, from questioning teens to experienced adults. At his reading tonight attendees should come ready for a warmly empowering experience that will leave them proud and smiling.
