Theatrical Evidence

FIU Theater has something to prove

If you’re like us, you get chills simply glancing at a bank statement. And don’t get us started on taxes. Luckily the FIU theater department is offering artistic relaxation, and evidence that numbers can be intriguing, in the form of David Auburn’s Tony Award-winning play, Proof. The play centers on gifted mathematicians, but don’t panic — it’s really all about family drama. If you managed to miss the cinematic version starring Gwyneth Paltrow, allow us to set the scene: Catherine’s father dies and leaves behind a brilliant proof that Catherine sets out to prove is her own. Catherine’s older sister thinks she’s lost her mind and wants Catherine to move. Catherine chooses to stay, and falls in love with the student who thinks she’s a phony. This is exactly the sort of stuff the numerically challenged can relate to — sibling rivalry, ill-suited lovers, and having to prove your intelligence.
