Artistic Freedom

Save your dollars at MAC

Visit a local museum on any given Sunday, and chances are you’ll encounter a flock of culture vultures known for being pennywise. It’s the day of the week when joints like Miami Art Central fling open their doors free of charge for the art-savvy — or those skinflint couch potatoes looking to take in a show.

The current lineup marks the first of the MAC @ MAM exhibits since the institution teamed up with the Miami Art Museum last December. Today’s lack of an admission fee provides an airtight excuse for packing the family into the buggy and making a beeline to catch Peter Friedel: Work 1964 - 2006 and Tacita Dean: Film Works without dropping a dime. The Friedel show was conceived as a retrospective, and organizers explain that it functions as a “medium,” emphasizing the “museum display as an instrument,” while presenting “aesthetic models for disarming configurations of power.” Sounds interesting. MAC honchos manage to lighten up on the mumbo jumbo when describing Tacita Dean’s films, though. According to them, the artist riffs on “constructions [that were] built in a visionary way yet never successfully functioned in society, which abandoned them to their fate.” See for yourself today, when you won’t have to pay for it. The exhibit runs through April 15.
