Smack That

Or get spiked, fool

Volleyball is one of those games that brings players to their knees, literally. One knee, two knees, either way, as long as you push, strike, or bump that white, marshmallowy ball over the net. Today and tomorrow, teams from throughout the east coast will do just that in the Native Eyewear Big Shot Volleyball Series. The tournament will be held on the beachfront courts at Lummus Park (sand is easier on the knees), where top male and female doubles teams will compete for $9,000 in cash prizes.

Miami’s own Gaston Macau, who plays on the International Pro Beach Volleyball Tour, is one of the stars taking the sand. Don’t worry, there will be no players left behind: There’s also a tournament open to amateurs and juniors. Visit www.eevb.net for registration information. Check-in is from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m. today, and 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. The games begin at the volleyball courts in Lummus Park, on Ocean Drive between Eighth and Ninth Sts., Miami Beach. All players must purchase a one-year AVP membership for ten dollars. Participation fees range from $30 to 60. Admission is free for spectators.
