Shave and a Haircut

Business in the front, party in the back

The Miami-Dade Public Library’s current exhibit “To the Barbershop: Call and Response Series # 2” takes a peek into the super-exclusive world of men’s grooming. The show features the works of two photographers from different eras, a journey from past to present, from the Jheri curl to the fade. The first, Richard Davenport, chronicled local shops in 1980, and through his lens you see the good vibes, trash-talking, and hair clippings that define this uniquely male bonding experience. And 26 years later, photojournalist and documentarian Noelle Theard found inspiration in Davenport’s work. She went back to the same spots, Liberty City’s Mop City and Overtown’s Green & Fort, and found that not much has changed. “The style of dress has changed, the prices have gone up, and the hairstyles have changed a little bit; but the barber shops have stayed pretty much the same,” Theard says. The exhibit runs until March 20 at the Miami-Dade Public Library main branch. Today’s library hours are 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
