Binging on Baklava

No vacationing to Greece this month? The next best thing might be the 28th Annual Greek Festival at St. Demetrios Orthodox Church. Xenia Tangalakis has been volunteering there since the fest’s inception. This year she’ll be helping to bake more than 6000 cookies. Other than the popular baklava, Tangalakis anticipates the visitors’ appetite for honey walnut cookies (a.k.a. melomakarona) or her favorite, almond sugar cookies that the Greeks call kourambiedes. Traditional homemade meals will range from leg of lamb in aromatic herbs, to gyros and souvlakia. While sipping frothy frappés, visitors can also stroll through a marketplace offering imported cheeses and olives, and the little ones will have no end of rides, games, and traditional dancing. Everyone is welcome for a weekend full of entertainment, cuisine, and Hellenic culture.
Fri., Feb. 9, 12-11 p.m.
