Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band

Despite the fact that his latest album, the optimistically dubbed Face the Promise, represents his first new set of songs in nearly a dozen years, Bob Seger is, to borrow the title of one of his most resilient oldies, still the same when it comes to his blue-collar brand of rock and roll. Long before Springsteen and Mellencamp began churning out their everyman anthems, Seger was echoing the anxieties and aspirations of America's working class. After conquering his hometown Detroit, Seger became a top draw in venues large and small throughout the heartland. A self-described "Travelin' Man" and "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man," the long-haired road warrior whose best-selling album Live Bullet — recorded with his erstwhile outfit, the Silver Bullet Band — became the blueprint for a truly memorable concert recording. Nowadays the most noticeably silver thing he sports is his reasonably cropped hair, which finds him looking more like an amiable old folkie than his renegade rocker persona of the Seventies and Eighties. Nevertheless — to quote another of his classics (somewhat annoyingly, we admit) — he still stokes the fire down below. — Lee Zimmerman
