Angels and Demons

Wim Wender’s Wings of Desire is one of those films you have to see. Seriously. Ask anyone who has seen it, and they will tell you it is brilliant, beautiful, and life-changing. The 1987 film is set in the war-damaged city of Berlin, where trench-coat-wearing angels try to comfort mortals whose heads are filled with tortured thoughts. One of the angels, Damiel, is tired of not being able to change people’s lives and wants to become mortal after he falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist, Marion. Wings also earned Wenders the Best Director award at Cannes. (But whatever you do, we implore you to not see the horrific American remake, City of Angels, with Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage.) Showtime is 2:30 p.m., following an introduction by Cinema Vortex’s Kevin Wynn, at the Bass Museum of Art. The film is free with museum admission (eight dollars; six for seniors and students). Call 305-673-7530, or visit www.bassmuseum.org.
