Schlock and Awe

We know what you’re really reading

There are the books you proudly display – volumes by Steinbeck, Mailer, and Twain. Then there are the well-thumbed ones you stash under your bed. The location of your copies of Jacqueline Susann’s Valley of the Dolls and Dominick Dunne’s People Like Us doesn’t mean those books are anything less than timeless classics. The brilliant minds behind the NADA Art Fair plan to celebrate lowbrow entertainment during this frenetic art season with Readings in Classic American Schlock. Brought to Miami by Altoids and the New Museum of Contemporary Art, the five-day public readings will feature notable curators, critics, and artists like Katherine Bernhardt, Mario Ybarra Jr., Philippe Vergne, and José Freire.

“We naturally wanted to create an alternative, more intimate environment to offer respite from the madness of the art fair,” explains Richard Flood, chief curator of the New Museum. Early visitors to the complimentary readings will receive a limited-edition tote bag designed by up-and-coming artist Adam Helms. Stop by the NADA Art Fair at he Ice Palace for enlightening excerpts from Diana Vreeland’s D.V. every hour today from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Sat., Dec. 9, 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
