More About
Lowbrow Art is a movement that pointy-head elitists dont care for you to embrace. Despite these puckered-ass purists notions, an appetite for all things underground has been swelling, and its damn time!
Today at ArtCenter/South Florida, curator and artist Francesco LoCastro unleashes Well Make a Lover Out of You, an exhibit that jackhammers the eye sockets with imagery thats scorching the Lowbrow scene. It is a clandestine genre whose seeds can be traced to West Coast surf culture during the Fifties and the renegade commix and subcultures of the Seventies. It is often associated with hot rods, graffiti, punk music, rock and roll, and tattoo art.
Ive worked with galleries from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York to put together this show, LoCastro boasts. We have 40 artists, including several from Miami, in an unprecedented display of the cream of the crop. The show is timed to coincide with Art Basel and promises to shake down the fairs uppity crowd. Ive been organizing these exhibits locally for several years, but this is the closest weve been to the [Miami Beach] Convention Center, LoCastro says. The buzz is tremendous. On exhibit through January 7. Call 305-674-8278, or visit www.artcentersf.org.
