They call Miami a sunny place for shady people. Our pastel-color buildings might look innocuous, but wander into the wrong place at the wrong time and you could stumble across a scene out of Brian De Palmas Scarface. There is dark mulch to be found under the coral rock: epithet-spewing politicos, mysterious foreigners communicating in a veritable babel of languages, and a plethora of gainfully unemployed residents. The 305 makes a great choice for Akashic Books ongoing series of original noir anthologies. Miami Noir promises to be a page turner that presents our city as a new version of the Old West, a frontier that teems with contradictory characters: old-timers longing for the good old days juxtaposed against hungry migrants seeking a slice of the fabled American pie.
