There’s something a bit strange about the name The Brand New Heavies. The group has been laying down effortlessly transcendent acid jazzy grooves for more than fifteen years. Rather than change the name à la New Kids on the Block (whose NKOTB alteration impressed no one), the Heavies are winning over a new audience via variations of the same chilled-out beats and fierce vocalizations that brought them to the forefront of London’s rare groove scene more than a decade ago.

Listeners are loving the newest release, Get Used to It. The album marks an important turning point for the British band, which has reunited with the incredible N’Dea Davenport for the first time in twelve years. Davenport was the belter behind some of the group’s biggest and most memorable hits, including “Dream On, Dreamer,” “Never Stop,” and the horn-laden lounge groove “Brother Sister.” As one of the few English soul bands to truly find an audience in America in the early Nineties, the Heavies’ return to local soil was welcomed with unparalleled success during their sold-out summer tour. Local fans are in for a real, rare musical treat tonight at Studio A, 60 NE Eleventh St., Miami. Tickets range from $20 to $25. Call 305-358-7625, or visit www.studioamiami.com.
