Cancer Sucks

Yep, cancer is the worst and it can strike anyone. Male or female, rich or poor, the evil cells don’t care how cool you are. And they certainly don’t give a damn if you are a fabulous New York cartoonist who is finally getting married at age 43. Marisa Acocella Marchetto is a self-described “shoe-crazy, lipstick-obsessed, wine-swilling, pasta-slurping, fashion-fanatic, single-forever, about-to-get-married big-city girl cartoonist” who found a lump in her breast, decided to kick cancer in the ass, and chronicle her battle in the colorful (in both illustration and language) graphic memoir Cancer Vixen. Marchetto’s cartoons have appeared in The New Yorker and Glamour, and her memoir is already set to hit the silver screen with Cate Blanchett in the starring role. You can meet the sassy author tonight at 7:30 at Books & Books.

And while you’re at the Bal Harbour Shops, stop by Saks Fifth Avenue from 6:00 to 9:00 for the Key to the Cure kickoff party. You can shop all weekend (October 12-15) during this national event, and a percentage of the sales will benefit women’s cancers. Tonight’s party features complimentary Grey Goose cocktails, tastings from the best local restaurants, and an appearance by party girl Elaine Lancaster. Admission is a $30 donation, which will go directly to the UM Sylvester Comprehesive Cancer Center. Call 305-243-2378, or visit www.saks.com.
