Finally Open

Bring an energy drink and your camera, and make sure to tie your dancing shoes on tightly. Today’s Target GlobalBeat free Carnival Center party promises to be the biggest event to hit downtown Miami in years. “We’re by Miami and for Miami. Today we’re inviting the public to come in and celebrate the center as a real local treasure,” explains assistant producer Kathryn Garcia. Forty local groups and six parades will venture through the spankin’-new Carnival Center for the Performing Arts (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami). The annual Miami Carnival will be taking place outside, with judging at the Plaza for the Arts. Besides the Caribbean revelers, enjoy the spectacular Chinese dragon dance, Bahamian junkanoos, Samba Academy, and a Haitian rara procession. Established acts like Locos por Juana, ¡Mayday!, and Conjunto Progreso will get everyone dancing. Inside the center, enjoy musical performances by Black Violin, Cuban timba band Tiempo Libre, the Klezmer Company Orchestra Jazz Project, as well as dance by D Projects and IFE-ILE. The distinctive notes of the Florida Memorial Steelband will fill the concert hall. The extravaganza begins at noon, but visitors are advised to arrive early. To avoid inevitable major road closures, patrons should use Metrorail. Indoor space is limited, so visit www.carnivalcenter.org for free admission details.
