Hit the Calle

Ever wish you could have heard Jack Kerouac or Hunter S. Thompson read live from the novels that made them famous and their readers yearn for a wild life on the road? Yeah, us too. Although Jack and Hunter are gone, you can head down to Coral Gables this evening to hear Cuban-born author Antonio Orlando Rodriguez read from his Spanish-language novel Aprendices de Brujo, which sounds a lot like the bastard stepchild of On The Road and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Set in the 1920s, Rodriguez’s novel tells the story of two boys from Bogotá who meet strange strangers and have adventures as they travel to Havana in search of a famous Italian stage actor who’s making a comeback. The free reading takes place in Spanish and is part of the Reader’s Club, which puts authors center stage courtesy of the Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College and local partners. Rodriguez cracks the spine on his weird, strange trip at 7:30 p.m. at Books & Books, 265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables. Call 305-442-4408, or visit www.booksandbooks.com.
