Tonight the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival will screen Quinceañera, a gritty indie film about a girl who loses her way on the path toward adulthood and lands in a gaggle of gay guys instead. Whoops! A quinceañera is the Mexican celebration of a fifteen-year-old girl’s birthday as she officially transitions into womanhood. It’s all very My Super Sweet 16, except it’s a deep-rooted social ritual instead of a spoiled brat’s display of self-indulgence.

Unlike the TV show, the film Quinceañera is legitimately good: It notably garnered both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. And with a star-making performance by hunky newcomer Jesse Garcia as a gay cholo, there's lots of eye candy to enjoy. Not that you should attend simply to check out the hot guy; this is cinema! Save the ogling for the afterparty at Buck 15, where your ticket stub will score you a free shot of tequila. The film begins at 7:30 p.m. at Regal South Beach 18, 1100 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach. Tickets cost $15. Call 305-531-2117, or visit www.mglff.com.
