Weird Weeds

Weird Feelings (Sounds Are Active)

Austin, Texas trio the Weird Weeds are likely to get their due in another decade or so, when some upstarts stumble upon their catalogue and — in the process of reinterpreting one of their frail, digest-it-and-forget-it songlets — infuse the source material with some much-needed presence and vigor. Yeah, okay: Near-silence is the canvas for this sort of micro folk-rock: drummer/percussionist Nick Hennies's vocals, and guitarist Sandy Ewen's sounds snaking skyward in wispy and intense tendrils as he caresses, pins, tickles, and rarely roughhouses the strings. Weird Feelings' lyrics are bundles of short, declarative sentences — "What I remember/A cabinet door/A basement light/Airplanes and trash collectors/They disturbed our sleep/But not as much as I did." — that operate as abstract art.
