Steady Pimpin’

Snoop Dogg and Ice-T know it’s necessary

Big Daddy Kane first tried to set the record straight in 1989, with “Pimpin’ Ain’t Easy.” Just last year, Memphis bass heads Three 6 Mafia attempted to reinforce that message, with the Academy Award-winning “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp.” Rather than trying to convince a skeptical audience about the arduous nature of the illegal sex trade, those rappers should turn to their industry peers. Blame Snoop Dogg and Ice-T for making pimping look so damn easy.

Even though he has never officially put a ho out on the stroll, Snoop has become the biggest pimp of them all. How many other slick-talking, weed-smoking former gang members have you seen in commercials for AOL, Chrysler, and Orbit gum? More recently “Beautiful”and “Drop It Like It’s Hot” put Snoop-a-loop back in heavy rotation. He reunited with Tha Dogg Pound, and their latest single, “Cali Iz Active,” is blazing the underground. Plus you can catch him on VH1, mackin’ on the Pussycat Dolls in the video for “Buttons.” Bring your eyedrops, ´cause it’s gonna be a smoky night at the James L. Knight Center. Doors open at 8:00 p.m., and admission costs $49. Call 305-358-5885, or visit www.jlkc.com.

When it comes to pimpin’ on wax, few have done it better (or longer) than Ice-T. He is credited with kicking off the West Coast gangsta rap scene back in 1982 with “The Coldest Rap.” Not satisfied just being the first to use the word ho in a hip-hop song, Ice continued to drop seminal tracks like “Colors,” “Killers,” and “Straight Up Nigga,” all opinionated messages delivered by a voice of authority. “Cop Killer” brought Ice his biggest controversy, and his anti-police stance made it all the more ironic when he began starring in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as detective Fin Tutuola. Even though he plays a cop on TV, Ice-T still flies his pimp flag high. Tonight he’s hosting a Player’s Ball, and he’ll be dropping old-school rhymes at Revolution, 200 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $30. Call 954-727-0950, or visit www.jointherevolution.net.
