Kids Beating Kids

After countless boxing movies and memorable matches, from screen legends like Rocky Balboa to real-life legends such as Muhammad Ali, Miami-Dade Parks will host the boxing spectacle you’ve been waiting for: a match between eight-year-olds. USA Boxing members from Key West to West Palm Beach, ages eight to adults, are invited to compete in the USA Amateur Boxing Event at Tropical Park Boxing Center. The event will begin with a weigh-in at 10:00 a.m., and the fights will start at 2:00 p.m. Though it is obvious the real entertainment will be in the junior division -- featuring boxers ages eight to twelve -- the other boxing branches, like the intermediate division (ages thirteen to fourteen) and the senior junior Olympic division (ages fifteen to sixteen), will be just as thrilling. Then there is the senior division (ages seventeen and older), which will be subdivided into weight categories ranging from light flyweight to super heavyweight. Admission is five dollars for spectators, and entrants must possess a USA Boxing passbook in order to throw punches. Call 305-226-8316, or visit www.miamidade.gov/parks/sports/boxing.asp.
