Perfect Timing!

Before Florida sinks into the sea

The sun hangs lower in the sky and the nights are warm and still, which makes this the ideal time of year for staging Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. But the FIU Theater group’s version is being produced for reasons beyond seasonal coincidence. “Philip Church, our director, looked at the world’s weather and the changes that have been happening due to global warming. Part of the play’s theme is that the world is in disorder, so he directed with that in mind,” explains business manager Stephen Neal. FIU’s version keeps the prose intact within a modern Miami setting, including devastating downpours and our ever-evolving skyline. “The Mechanicals, who are usually the town workmen, will actually be construction workers,” laughs Neal. The show will take place tonight at 8:00 at the Roxy Performing Arts Center, Theater 4. Tickets cost $12. Call 305-226-0030, or visit www.fiu.edu/~thedan.
