Even if your sister still teases you about the time you ran around the yard screaming because a butterfly landed on your head (Hey, you were three, okay?), you have since worked past your fear and can appreciate the delicate beauty of the pollen-loving nectar-suckers. Now, if you’ve forgiven your big sis for her incessant taunting, you can take her to Butterfly Day at Fairchild. Today from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and the Miami Blue Chapter of the North American Butterfly Association invite you to stop and enjoy a day of butterfly talks and butterfly walks. Learn about -- and purchase -- butterfly-attracting plants (most are drought-tolerant too), become intimate with the lifestyles of the colorful insects in your garden, and take photos in the butterfly garden and under the vine pergola. Considering the average life cycle of a butterfly can be as short as 21 days, you won’t want to miss a minute of their fleeting beauty, so arrive early for a pancake breakfast at the Veranda.
