Nature's Sharp-Shooter

It’s hard being a cactus. People call you a prick and run away screaming. Cute daisies and daffodils are adopted as you languish in the corner of the nursery, desperately trying to push out a bloom and make yourself more attractive. And when you finally pretty yourself up with a colorful blossom, it stinks like a middle school locker room. Luckily for you, the South Florida Cactus and Succulent Society has your back. This weekend the 23rd annual Cactus and Succulent Show and Sale will give props to hundreds of different species -- including the monkey chair, golden barrel, and desert rose -- and society members will be on hand to offer cultivating and propagating tips. Prickly pals can be adopted today through Sunday at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, where they will be chillin’ in the climate-controlled auditorium from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. The show is free with paid admission to the garden ($20, $15 for seniors, and $10 for children). Call 305-667-1651, or visit www.sfloridacactus.org.
