We’re So Board

The caveat for really cool stuff is the longer it exists, the less cool it becomes. BoardUp is Miami’s first Pro-Am Wakeboard Championship, which makes it pretty cool (although wakeboarding is already a $90-billion-per-year industry). The sport is also known as skurfing because it combines water skiing and surfing -- participants stand sideways atop a short, wide board tethered to a boat. Top boarders will go big for $17,000, including a $10,000 first prize. Along with the all-day competition (including nighttime finals under the lights), music will be provided by DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Irie, Atomic Tangerine, the Linx, and the Spam Allstars. Pintsize sensation Lil’ Peppi, who is seven years old, will perform his breakout rap “Latin Stomp.” Extreme-sport demonstrations and an “interactive fun zone” provide more diversion. Food will be provided by Cafe Tu Tu Tango. The fun runs from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. at Miami Marine Stadium. General admission is $25, VIP $35. Call 866-840-882, or visit www.board-up.net.
