Massive Attack

Collected (Virgin)

Massive Attack's coolness expiration date is as yet unknown. The Bristol, England-based cooperative came to prominence with shivering bass, unpredictably syncopated beats, reggae-flecked rhythms, Middle Eastern rattles, and vocals as seductive as they are threatening. Over the years the core members have been joined by a revolving door of collaborators (Sinéad O'Connor, Tracy Thorn, Tricky, Elizabeth Fraser, Horace Andy). Collected draws from a catalogue of four albums (Blue Lines, Protection, Mezzanine, and The 100th Window), as well as soundtracks to Danny the Dog and Bullet Boy, plus numerous rarities, unreleased material, and one-offs (including artists such as David Bowie, Mos Def, and Madonna). In addition to 24 songs, Collected features a DVD that contains every boundary-breaking video the group has created.

It's not often that you can listen to a band's entire discography and come away without feeling the slightest bit dated.
