Behind the Wheel

Homestead roars all weekend with a mixed bag of auto racing offering a variety of action for speed freaks. The rubber burning covers plenty of ground: Daytona prototype sports cars run the road course in the Grand American Road Racing Grand Prix of Miami and IndyCar roadsters like those of the Fifties and Sixties go 100 miles in the USAC Silver Crown Series (both on Saturday). The weekend culminates Sunday with the opening race of the 2006 IRL IndyCar season, the Toyota Indy 300. Top IndyCar stars -- including Miami’s Helio Castroneves (two time Indy 500 winner), Key Biscayne’s Tony Kanaan, defending Toyota Indy 300 champ Dan Wheldon, and Danica Patrick -- will be on hand. The oval is a mile and a half, the road course 2.21 miles. The grandstand holds 65,000, and there are 30,000 parking spaces at the 600 acre facility. Along with the main events are a number of other races, including practice laps (Friday). Racing takes place all day, all weekend at Homestead Miami Speedway. There are numerous ticket options, ranging from $20 to $200, and several entrances to the facility, so be sure to visit www.miamihomesteadspeedway.com to plan your weekend. Call 305-230-RACE for tickets and other info.
