The Miami River is often called the city’s artery of trade. Running the 5.5 miles from Biscayne Bay into the heart/spleen/psoas of Miami, it handles more than four billion dollars’ worth of cargo every year. Projects are also underway to clean it up and make it more viable for the 12,000 residential units about to cleave to its banks. To celebrate this renewal, the Miami River Commission is throwing the 10th Annual Miami River Day. Today’s festivities begin at 11:00 a.m. and churn until 5:00 p.m. at José Martí Park. You can ride in a water taxi or take a riverboat tour; chill out on the shore to the sounds of local rhythmic band Suenalo; learn about the environment; or just grab some grub. Kids can take part in folk art demos or face painting and watch the performers tackle stilt walking. One request, however: no river dancing. Admission is free.
