Weaving a Musical Tale

Mario Betto is one of the good guys. A few years ago, the high end stylist started Hairstylists for Humanity, offering free haircuts to the homeless. The organization now serves thousands, improving their self esteem and chances of gaining employment. But the cosmopolitan Betto -- Italian born, Zimbabwe bred, proficient in three languages -- desired a new outlet for his compassionate artistry. Combing Through Life’s Tangles is that outlet. The play, which visits the Byron Carlyle Theater through Sunday at 8:00 p.m., takes on religion, mental illness, Mars and Venus permutations, immigration, homelessness, and split ends. But this is no heavy handed blunt cut. Combing is a comedy, and a screwball one at that. It is also a musical, replete with “Proud Mary,” “California Dreamin’,” and a snip of Neil Diamond. Oh, the possibilities of a bleach induced “I Am, I Said”! Tickets cost $50 for the show and cast party, $20 for adults, and $15 for students. There’s also a student only show Sunday at 2:00. Fri., Feb. 10, 8 p.m.; Sat., Feb. 11, 8 p.m.; Sun., Feb. 12, 2 & 8 p.m.
