Still a Player

The pastime of antique toy collecting can be divided into two distinct periods: before eBay and after eBay. Before the online auction site made its debut in 1995, folks who were seeking die cast cars or Disney collectibles roamed annual exhibitions for rare finds. A quarter century ago, when Steve Fuller and Tom Graboski started the Original Miami Antique Toy, Doll, and Collectible Show, there was competition. “Back then, there were about a dozen shows in South Florida alone. Now we’re the only ones left,” says Fuller. Today from 10:00 to 4:00 at the Hotel InterContinental Airport West you can relive pre Internet times and browse an impressive assortment of playthings, including tin toys from the turn of the century, rare dolls, and Sixties television show collectibles. “We’re just tickled to still be here after 26 years,” Fuller says. Let’s hope his annual show, like the Lionel trains he collects, keeps chugging along. General admission is $5. Call 305-446-4488.
